welfaregroups

What is a Welfare Group?

Welfare Groups can be formed by students who wish to carry out the following types of activities:

* Running Welfare projects that will benefit the student community

* Campaigning to instigate change on issues that effect students
* Creating support groups for welfare issues that affect Students at the University of Kent

How is a Welfare Group different from a Student Led Volunteering Group or Society?

Societies are groups of students with a similar interest who come together to do that interest (eg- dance). Student Led Volunteering Groups are more similar to welfare groups but focus on a wider range of issues and projects that don’t necessarily concern student welfare.

How do I start a Welfare Group?

Any student can apply to start a new Welfare Group. To do so they will need to complete a registration form and provide Kent Union with a governing document. These will then be viewed by the Vice-President (Welfare) who will consult with the Representation and Democracy Manager and if necessary the Medical Centre, Counselling services and the Colleges Student Support Coordinator or any other groups. The application will then be accepted or declined. If declined, feedback will be given as to the reason why and there will be an opportunity to amend the application and resubmit.

Once set up, Welfare groups can apply to the relevant funding available from Kent Union at that time by completing a Welfare Groups Budget Form. This may include start up costs or specific projects.

Welfare Groups are required to present evaluation information for each of the projects they have undertaken at the end of each term regardless of whether or not Kent Union funding was used to run the project. We will then use these forms to measure their impact, and how they have achieved their objectives.

If you have any questions about starting a group please contact the Vice-President (Welfare) by emailing union-welfare@kent.ac.uk or popping up to the Student Activities Centre (over Essentials)
